Dhillon Kaur

Dhillon Kaur is a multidisciplinary artist working across drawing, sculpture, collage and jewellery-making. Having recently graduated with a first-class degree in fine art, her work in her final year explored connection and communication across organic and digital worlds. Her work is meticulous, metamorphic and synthesises materials to investigate tensions between the embodied and disembodied. She takes interest in womanhood’s relationship to nature and the power of sisterhood. The interconnectivity of beings is explored through manipulating the body in her artwork. Whether it be welding pylons that connect with cables, beads and twigs, or drawing on meters of joined up rolling paper, she’s always striving to capture the thread that weaves consciousness across forms.
Dhillon’s passion for community arts has run alongside her artwork for years, having delivered and helped facilitate creative workshops for schools, charities and community organisations. She takes her interest in craft as a tool for bringing people together, encouraging community and self-expression. Having worked as a support worker, she takes those skills in communication and care to community arts.
Creating commissioned works has been a big part of her practice, specialising in creating lesbian couple portraits as she finds fulfilment in creating the representation that needs to exist and be a part of the pride other lesbians have in their love. She has exhibited work at Capital Group’s pride exhibition three years in a row, and though her work is often centred around connection more broadly, the work around lesbian representation and being a gender-nonconforming woman is always a big part of her practice. Selling prints, badges, jewellery and t-shirts at the London Dyke Market two years in a row was also pivotal in grounding herself within a community of other lesbian artists.
She enjoys taking all kinds of commissions, having participated in artwork for festivals, healthcare settings, charities and youth organisations. Her work has also been a part of varying zines and publications that promote feminist principles and creating space for marginalised communities. Currently based in South Wales, she enjoys being a part of spaces that promote women’s art in South Wales, having work in Tides Gallery and seeking out other creative spaces where she can find community and opportunity.
